Mike Kelley is one of the greatest art innovators and the fact that the Pompidou Centre gives him this summer retrospective really marks his importance in contemporary creation.

From his early drawings (a technique that he stopped and is one of his most celebrated formats) to the early experimentation with installations and his uncommon, strange and even sick, use of the pop culture (that rock bands like Sonic Youth fell for), the merciless anatomy of Kelley to the American dream splashes bits and pieces of his own personal history.

Get ready to ride because this exhibition (until the 5th of August), posthumous as Kelly died last year, is really going to be historic!

Until August 5th, 11 am – 9 pm

There’s not much to say about one of the greates innovators in the recent art history. From the streets to the galleries and museums, the work of Keith Haring, its strenght, its savage poetry opened the door for a bunch of creators with an attirance for the graphic design and graffitti that later played a huge importance in the 90′s disfunctional art, lack art, etc.

But not only aesthetically his work turned the art scene upside down (with his friend Basquiat): he symbolizes also the political fight against capitalism, homophobia, AIDS and greed, becoming a real political activist without forgetting the acid sense of humor of his works.

If you want to dive into the amazing and cathaclismic world of Keith Haring you have two options as the retrospective of his work will be held in two different locations: the Musée d’Art moderne de la ville de Paris and Le 104.

Spring in Paris is an enchanting period that seizes all our senses, and offers many more things! It’s a festive time when we have the Fête de la Musique, la Fête du Travail, our Jazz festivals, where the terraces of our emblematic Café’s once again come to life after this long cold winter.

We – at the Citizen Hotel – are glad to welcome you at this time of the year we will all enjoy together, and this is why we are happy to share some of the events and activities that we love during this period!

A stroll in a park

Les Buttes Chaumont

You can’t miss a lovely stroll in Les Buttes Chaumont. This park is one of the biggest in Paris, where you’ll find several cliffs and bridges, a grotto that encloses a 20-metre-high waterfall, a lake, and several English and Chinese gardens.

La promenade plantée

This is an unusual “balade” that is elevated over the streets of Paris. It is an extensive green belt that takes you through buildings, through tunnels- you will feel like you are in a garden whilst being completely surrounded by the city.

Various musical entertainments

Concerts

Pink Martini will be performing at Le Grand Rex on the 11th of April and the 12th of April

The legendary Neil Young and Crazy horse will be performing at Le Palais Omnisports de Bercy on the 6th of June

The world famous Saxophone player Maceo Parker will be playing at Le Casino de Paris on the 13th of May

Musical

The classic Full Monty musical will be playing in Paris from the 5th of April to the 28th of June, in English and French, so pick your dates wisely.

Festival

For those who don’t get enough with one artist, there will be the very popular Solidays Festival in the Hippodrome de Longchamp. Last year’s event gathered thousands of people thanks to artists such as Metronomy, Ben Howard, Kavinsky, Shaka Ponk, Charlie Winston, and many other alternative scene artists.

Terraces to sit back relax

Café Charlot in the Marais

On a sunny day strolling through the Marais, you should drop by Café Charlot to have a coffee on the terrace as you watch all the Parisians rush to whatever it is they do. If you go on a Sunday there is always lots going on because many Parisians go and brunch in the area. You’ll see a bunch of people leaving the Marché des Enfants rouges with take away food.

Marché des Enfants Rouge

This open market right next to Café Charlot is a great place to have lunch on a warm day. You’ll find a variety of cuisine from different regions of the world. The line for North African cuisine is usually 45min long, which says something about the quality of the food! You’ll also find French cuisine, Lebanese, Japanese, Italian. You should be able to find something to match your taste…

La rotonde, brasserie on the basin de la Villette.

This brasserie was built 200 years ago and has been left unused for quite some time now. It reopened a couple of years ago and benefits from a huge terrace in front of the basin of la Villette. You’ll find it right at the exit of Stalingrad in front of the basin. This area differs in demographic from the touristic areas you might be used to, and that’s why you’ll like it.

And last but not least Roland Garros!

21st of May until the 9th of June

Roger, Rafael, Novak, Andy, will all be there, playing in one of the four grand slams. Make sure you buy your tickets in advance, as this is one of the most popular events around the year.

Hopefully you’ll be able to enjoy some of these activities during your coming stay in spring. We are all looking forward to your stay and wish you well until then.

The Citizen Team

It’s held by two Mexican girls who are happy to share their knowledge about Mezcal and Tequila. You can of course get an order of Guacamole or nachos, but don’t expect anything fancy, because this bar is very rustic and they know it ! You’ll find an international crowd there that are glad to mingle and share their travelling experiences. Don’t miss out ! And a little tip before trying Mezcal, its way better with a slice of orange than a slice of lemon…

Right across from the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, is the contemporary art museum Palais de Tokyo. And inside, you will discover a world that’s only an appearance, where our perception of things becomes a paradox. Like a Cold Sun…. which is actually the title of the current show, under which four different exhibitions share the immense and inspiring spaces of perhaps one of the most interesting art spaces in Paris. Just wandering through the halls of this building is worth the visit, you can also have a bite in the very cool restaurant or buy some catalogues or magazines at the exceptional library too!

Après Imaginez l’imaginaire, le Palais de Tokyo dévoile avec Soleil Froid la surface d’un monde étrange où naissent des « espaces insoupçonnés » que les nombreux artistes invités explorent chacun à leur manière.

Irish architect and furniture designer Eileen Gray was a woman ahead of her time, an artist who wasn’t afraid of exploring and moving forward. She was actually the inventor of tubular furniture, which later on became so popular yet continued to maintain its elegance and its resilience to trends and fashions. Her ageless designs are now gathered at Le Pompidou in a restrospective that will give us a real idea of the value of her work.

If you’re visiting Paris for the first time or the 100th time, you must go to the Louvre. Go see those historic pieces of art that you’ll fall in love with or the ones that already got stolen heart… And also to keep up with what’s happening in the world of contemporary art.

With a programmation that invites living artists to expose in some of its spaces with temporary exhibitions, the Louvre brings fresh air to its collections.

Currently, the well known Libanese artist, Walid Raad (founder of the indispensable Atlas Group) is showing the first part of a three year project committed to the Louvre, called “Preface to the first edition”, where he has imagined a universal museum.

Not to be missed!

The “impressionnistes” revolutioned the history of art not just with their way of expressing their visions on the canvas, but also by breaking the traditional objectivity of a craft that focused more on perfectionism than reality. They were also witness and vocals of their time representing the change of customs that the XIXth Century brought, but also by transforming society through the costumes. In this exhibition, at the always wonderful Musée d’Orsay, we are exposed to the importance of the dress code in a time where it started to get really loose and opened up to new ways of individual expression.
